Your installation
guide.
From choosing your zones to planning installation day—here’s what to expect.
Your vehicle & setup
Will ambient lighting work with my car?
Compatibility is confirmed individually for each vehicle. Send us your year, make, and model so we can confirm the right kit, installation requirements, and final estimate for your interior.
How much does an installation cost?
Footwell Starter installations begin at $80 under our current introductory pricing. Ambient lighting pricing depends on your vehicle and the zones you choose. Use our quote configurator for a personalized estimate. We confirm vehicle requirements, final pricing, and any additional work with you before installation.
What’s included in each package?
Footwell Starter includes front and rear footwell lighting with app control. Ambient Essential includes door trim and dashboard lighting; Ambient Signature adds the center console; Complete Interior adds footwells to those ambient zones. Ambient lighting and footwells use the same SD Ambient Customs app. Ambient lighting also includes a remote; footwells use app control only. Fuse-box hardwiring is an optional add-on when needed.
How long does installation take?
Footwell Starter typically takes 1–1.5 hours. Ambient Essential typically takes 2–3.5 hours, Ambient Signature 2.5–4 hours, and Complete Interior 3.5–5 hours. Timing varies by vehicle, selected zones, and any additional wiring work. Your configurator shows an estimated time for your setup.
Can I choose which areas of my interior light up?
Yes. Choose doors, dashboard, center console, and footwells in the configurator. Ambient lighting and footwells use the same SD Ambient Customs app.
Can you match a look I saw on Instagram?
Send us the photo or video along with your vehicle details. We’ll discuss the zones, colors, and kit options that can achieve a similar look. The final appearance depends on your vehicle’s trim and layout.
Colors, controls & power
Can I change the colors and brightness?
Yes. Use the SD Ambient Customs app to adjust the colors and brightness of your ambient lighting and footwells.
How do I control the lights?
Ambient lighting and footwell lighting both use the same SD Ambient Customs app. Ambient lighting also includes a remote; footwells use app control only. Get the App ↗
How are the lights powered, and do they turn off with the car?
The standard setup plugs into your vehicle’s 12V cigarette-lighter power outlet. Ambient lighting and footwells each need their own outlet, so a standard setup with both needs two available outlets. If you don’t have enough outlets, hardwiring is needed. Automatic shutoff depends on whether your outlet stays powered when the car is off, or on the hardwire connection used. We’ll confirm the power and shutoff setup for your vehicle.
What is hardwiring, and when do I need it?
Hardwiring connects the lighting to a suitable vehicle power circuit instead of using a 12V cigarette-lighter plug. Our configurator offers a fuse-box hardwire add-on for $50. It’s needed when there isn’t an available 12V outlet—for example, when you want ambient lighting and footwells but don’t have two outlets. We’ll confirm the connection, shutoff behavior, and final requirements before installation.
Installation & finish
What does the installation look like during the day?
The lighting follows your interior’s trim lines, and its appearance varies with your vehicle and the kit. Take a look at our daylight gallery photo to see a real installation. We can discuss how the components will sit in your particular interior before booking.
Will any wiring be visible?
We do our best to hide every wire and route it neatly behind the interior trim. Every vehicle is different, so we can’t guarantee that every part of the wiring will be completely invisible. We’ll discuss any limitations with your setup.
Does installation require drilling or modifying my interior?
It depends on your vehicle and kit. Some installations may require drilling at the door connector or passthrough to route wiring. We don’t cut existing vehicle wiring as part of a standard installation. Certain kits or features, such as activation with the door lights, may require tapping into a vehicle circuit. We’ll discuss any necessary modifications before proceeding.
Can the lighting be removed later?
Removal options depend on the kit and how it’s installed. Adhesive can leave residue or marks, and any drilled holes will remain, so we can’t promise a completely mark-free reversal. If removability is important to you, let us know before installation.
Can you install a kit I already purchased?
Yes, we install approved customer-supplied kits. Send us the kit link or product details by Instagram DM so we can review it and provide labor pricing. Customer-supplied kit installations do not include a warranty.
What warranty or aftercare do you provide?
For installations using kits we supply, we provide a 14-day labor warranty and a one-month warranty on the parts we supply. If you experience an issue, contact us with your installation details and a description or photo of the problem. Customer-supplied kit installations do not include a warranty.
Booking & policies
What space do I need for mobile installation?
Please provide a safe, level parking space with enough clearance for all four doors to open fully at the same time and room for us to work around the vehicle. Keep the work area accessible and remove personal belongings from the door pockets, footwells, and center console.
A garage or covered space is preferred, provided it still allows every door to open fully. If rain, strong wind, or extreme heat makes the work unsafe or risks your interior, we’ll contact you to arrange suitable shelter or reschedule. Please tell us about parking restrictions, gates, or access instructions before the appointment.
Do you offer mobile installation?
Yes—choose drop-off at our 92154 location with no travel fee, or mobile installation within San Diego County for an additional fee based on driving distance. Enter your address in the quote calculator to see your mobile fee, rounded up to the next whole dollar. The full travel fee is paid with your booking deposit and is not charged again in your remaining balance. We confirm service availability and your appointment before payment. Calculate your mobile installation estimate ↗
How do I book, and is a deposit required?
Build your estimate and text us your installation request. Once your vehicle, final price, and appointment are confirmed, a non-refundable deposit of $75 or your installation total—whichever is lower—secures your booking. It goes toward your final installation price. For mobile appointments, the full travel fee is added to the booking deposit and paid upfront. Refunds will be provided where required by law.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel?
Please give at least 48 hours’ notice when rescheduling; your deposit transfers to the new appointment. Cancellations are non-refundable, and no-shows forfeit their deposit, subject to applicable law. Contact us as soon as your plans change.
How should I prepare my car for installation?
Please bring your vehicle reasonably clean and remove valuables and personal belongings, especially from the footwells, door pockets, and center console. If we’ve approved a customer-supplied kit, bring the kit and all its included components.
What payment methods do you accept?
Credit cards, debit cards, Afterpay, cash, Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, and Apple Pay accepted. Afterpay is subject to eligibility and approval. Any remaining balance is due after installation. View payment options ↗
